Your customer wants concrete, now what?
There are numerous options when it comes to types of flooring for your space. Concrete floors are a great option for a lot of reasons (see “Why Concrete?”) However, concrete floors themselves come with a variety of options dependent on what your space needs, and what your customer wants out of the floors.
Our staff is knowledgeable and works to help you figure out what would work best for your space. Let us help advise you so that you can advise your customer.

What Level Of Polishing Should We Select?
Polished concrete floors are truly custom, and can be as shiny or matted as you choose. Sometimes it can be difficult to decide which level of polishing is best for your customer and their space.
Typically there are three general categories for spaces with polished concrete:
- Warehouse: matte finish
- Retail: satin finish
- Showroom: high gloss finish
A high gloss polished concrete floor is very smooth and reflects light. In contrast, a matte finish floor is not as smooth to the touch, does not reflect light, and is relatively porous. Low level polished concrete floors take about half the time of a shiny floor. High polished floors require more tooling, time, and labor, making it a more expensive option. If you want a little bit of both, you can choose a polishing level anywhere between matte and high shine.
Our advice: consider the importance of design, aesthetic, and practicality in the space. For example; a warehouse floor doesn’t need a high polished floor because of heavy machinery, large scale maintenance, and it doesn’t need to “wow” and impress as a luxury car showroom would.
What About Restroom and Kitchen Floors?
Restrooms: We always recommend a urethane floor coating for restroom floors. This coating helps with protection and maintenance! Urethane protects your floors from corroding from urine and harsh chemicals often used to clean bathrooms. Its also much easier to clean.
Kitchens: For kitchens we typically recommend an epoxy floor. This floor coating helps with maintenance by being resistant to harsh chemicals, durability to heavy machinery, and slip resistance for spills. Stay tuned for our future post all about epoxies!
Stain Color and Aggregate
Because of the nature of concrete, the way it was mixed and poured, all concrete staining, grinding, and polishing is going to be unique. It is difficult to determine how exactly the stain will take to the concrete, how much aggregate is visible, and how porous the concrete is, until we get in there and do it. That being said…
Staining: We offer several color choices that you can choose from for your space. If needed, we can provide a color chart as a base for selection. Keep in mind, this is not exact.
In addition to the color, you can also choose the intensity of the color (how light or dark the color is on the floor). You can combine staining and polishing, or simply choose one or the other. Stained concrete colors also vary throughout the concrete floor, giving a nice array of colors. We love that concrete floors are totally unique and custom every time.
Aggregate: Aggregate is the coveted “salt and pepper”, the specs of minerals that you see scattered throughout concrete floor. Sometimes aggregate is visible with little grinding, but often times it only becomes increasingly visible the more you grind the concrete down. Even then, it is not a guarantee. Aggregate levels depend much more on how the concrete was mixed and poured.
